Getting started

What is Alias?

Alias is a team word game. One player explains a word without saying it, teammates guess, and the app keeps the timer and score.

How many people can play?

You can play head-to-head with two people or split a larger group into two or more teams.

What do we need to play?

One iPhone or Android phone with Alias installed is enough. Create the teams, add players and pass the phone between rounds.

How long does a game take?

It depends on the target score and round time. Lower the points needed to win for a quick game, or keep the 50-point default for a longer match.

Can children play Alias?

Yes. Use familiar, age-appropriate categories, mixed-age teams and a longer timer. Adults should agree on suitable clues before the game.

Can Alias be used in a classroom?

Yes. Small teams and short rounds make vocabulary practice active. Choose a suitable category and give every learner a turn to explain.

Rules and scoring

What is the goal of the game?

Explain as many words as possible to your team. The first team to reach the selected target score wins.

What is not allowed in a clue?

Do not say the answer, a part of it, a related word built from the same root, or a direct translation from another language.

How is a guessed word scored?

Each correctly guessed word adds one point to the active team.

Do skipped words lose points?

Only when Skip penalty is enabled. With that setting on, each skipped word subtracts one point.

What is the common last word?

When Common last word is enabled, all teams may try to guess the final word after the active team's time runs out. The app asks which team got it.

Who explains next?

Players rotate through the names added to each team. After the score is confirmed, pass the phone to the next team and follow the prompt.
